    Abstract

This paper provides two reflections on the authors’ experiences of writing a PhD thesis by monograph, and a PhD thesis by publication, and discusses the advantages and challenges facing students and supervisors approaching these formats. It concludes with reflections on how to prepare for the viva process. This paper is aimed at prospective and current PhD students, and supervisors, who may find these insights useful to inform students’ choice of thesis format.
