Abstract
The multiview total focusing method is an extension of the total focussing method for imaging using ultrasonic signals acquired using a phased array. Reflections of the ultrasonic signal from the component geometry allow for multiple views of an inspection region to be produced from alternative angles of incidence, essentially producing a series of images for different ray paths. This produces a significant amount of information, from which defect detection and characterisation become much more efficient as high confidence can be achieved from a smaller number of inspections, and can rely on techniques such as data fusion to extract the relevant information from the results. Typically, it is assumed that defects will be located either below or directly adjacent to an array in contact with the sample, or within the array’s line-of-sight. By using ultrasound which reflects from different features in the geometry, the region of interest can be expanded, enabling greater coverage from a more remote inspection. This is particularly valuable for components which have a complex geometry, and for components which have limited access for an ultrasonic array, for which direct ultrasonic rays cannot be used inspect – or non-line-of-sight regions. Results are presented on an experimental test case which finds improved defect detection compared to other results over the same region of interest.
