Abstract

This essay argues that, rather than there being such a thing as 'the liberal subject' or 'the bourgeois subject', there was a proliferation of possible concepts of the subject in liberal Spain. Social classes and institutions proved unable to impose a hegemonic model of the subject. The difficulty of finding a stable basis for the new society was at the root of these multiplying versions of the 'subject'.
