Abstract

Since the early 1990s, violence against migrant women coming from Eastern Europe is a topic often denounced in Italian cinema of migration. This paper examines the way in which Italian director Carlo Mazzacurati (1956-2014) represents a woman’s resistance against violence in his film Vesna va veloce (1996). This essay aims to demonstrate that Vesna's story of migration to Italy is told through the employment of fairy tale tropes which construct an alternative dimension to the harsh realities of prostitution experienced by the migrant.
