Abstract

Dig the Castle is a project centred around a Norman motte and bailey castle, the seat of a feudal barony, in Great Torrington, Devon. In the twentieth century, the castle site had begun to be subsumed by the public sphere infrastructure, with one bailey under a carpark, the other previously remodelled into a bowling green. While in plain sight, the asset was, effectively, culturally 'lost' to the people of the town. The project developed a model of community archaeology founded on the principles of co-creation and co-production; with the aim to engage, educate and inspire.
