Abstract

This talk uses the career of diva tragedienne Mary Ann Yates (1728-1787) to explore the attractions (and economic impact) of female rage in the eighteenth century. Looking at box office receipts, advertising and contemporary theatre criticism, it is clear that rage, not sex, was the main attraction, and theorises a female gazing-with that admires and aspires rather than objectifies the actress.
