Kalimantacin A is a polyketide natural product isolated from Pseudomonas fluorescens which exhibits a narrow spectrum of antibiotic activity against Staphylococci, including multidrug resistant strains. It has a fascinating structure which includes three consecutive, but different, β-branches (at C-3, C-5 and C-7). The work described in this thesis is focussed on elucidating how this structural complexity is introduced during kalimantacin biosynthesis and how modifications to the structure affect antibiotic activity.
