Abstract

This thesis is comprised of three empirical essays. All of which are concerned with aspects of accountability. The first essay entitled “Biodiversity reporting at German airports: a hermeneutic reflection” uses Gadamer’s hermeneutic circle (1979) to explore the extent, contents, and nature of biodiversity disclosures of German airports. The second essay entitled “Exploring power in accountability relationships: public participation in airport expansion in Germany” explores the participatory process, and the interplay of accountability and power. Based on the findings of interviews conducted with stakeholders involved with the process a conceptual framework, combining the work of Rached (2016) and Fung (2020), is developed to understand accountability and power in public participation processes. The third essay entitled “Accountability in the German biodiversity compensation agency landscape” explores how quality is assessed and upheld in the German compensation agency sector. Interviews with representatives of compensation agencies, experts, and policy makers are conducted, resulting in an enhanced understanding of accountability in the sector.
