Abstract
In the twenty-first century, international students from China have been the largest mobile intellectual population in the world (Henze & Zhu, 2012). Concurrently, the number of Chinese academics with an international PhD has increased. This study looks at the experiences of Chinese academics with an international PhD from a young age perspective. Based on Bourdieu’s (1986) theory and data from 34 semi-structured interviews, it presents how field, habitus and capital are interconnected to shape their educational and professional trajectories, which provides an understanding of how academic elites are reproduced in China.
