First model independent measurement of the CKM angle γ using B±→DK± and B±→Dπ±, D→2π+- decays at LHCb

Student thesis: Doctoral ThesisDoctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Abstract

The measurement presented in this thesis is that of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) angle γ using B ± → D(→ 2π +2π −)K ± and B ± → D(→ 2π
+2π −)π ± signal decays, where D represents the superposition of D
0 and D¯ 0 . A model independent approach is implemented for the measurement which utilises the distribution of signal events over the D meson decay phase space. The 2017 LHCb experiment dataset is used for the measurement. The
CKM angle γ is determined to be (38.8 +30 −22) ◦ . This is the first model independent measurement of the CKM angle γ in the D → 2π +2π − decay mode.
