Investigating Underlying Causes for Differing Search Organisation Patterns in the Cancellation Test

Student thesis: Master's ThesisMaster of Science by Research (MScR)

Abstract

Visual search involves strategy. Strategy refers to various search behaviours that individuals can choose from to find objects. Visual search literature has primarily focused on single target paradigms to build our understanding of the dynamics of visual search. However, multi-target visual search presents distinct behaviours from single-target search behaviour. The distinct behaviours highlight that understanding search behaviour for multiple targets must be tested within multi-target search tasks. The cancellation test is one such multi-target visual search paradigm, and the strategy within this test can be inferred through search organisation. Search organisation represents the degree to which search lies on an organised path. Significantly, search organisation varies naturally within a healthy adult population, and this variation does not predict performance. This thesis focuses on understanding the individual differences driving the various search strategies in the cancellation test. Study 1 had particip
