Abstract

This mixed-method study investigates the perceptions of professional roles and challenges faced by student affairs administrators in Hong Kong when carrying out their jobs. Drawing on data from 58 survey responses and 11 semi-structured interviews, the research reveals a complex higher education landscape characterised by job ambiguity, high stress and limited institutional resources. These factors impede administrators’ capacity to support both local and non-local students amidst significant social changes, including social unrest and the global pandemic.

The findings highlight an urgent need for enhanced intercultural fluency and negotiation skills, as conflicts among student groups have intensified. Budget cuts have adversely affected both staff and student development, limiting administrators’ ability to prioritise student growth and wellbeing. Despite their commitment to professional development, time and financial constraints restrict access to training opportunities.

The study suggests that wellbeing and resilience will be increasingly vital in higher education, given the uncertainties within Hong Kong’s socio-political environment. Student affairs administrators are evolving into conflict resolvers and trauma stewards, necessitating a focus on addressing students’ emotional and psychological needs. Furthermore, professional development is essential for fostering resilience in the face of ever-changing challenges. The research advocates for a re-evaluation of job responsibilities and promotes a holistic approach to wellbeing that benefits both students and staff.

This study contributes to the discourse on the professionalisation of student affairs administrators in Hong Kong and calls for greater institutional support, highlighting the necessity of robust support systems to enhance the overall student experience in higher education.
