With escalating risk of life, the short term and long term effects of sepsis, on the body and the healthcare services can be reduced with immediate patient treatment. Symptoms of sepsis need to be recognised as soon as they arise, which has prompted the urgent need for fast, low cost and convenient methods of early detection. This experiment proposes a biosensor based on nanoparticle diffusivity. It utilises the particle tracking of biomarkers that are to be found in high levels in sepsis infected blood, specifically, Interleukin 6. The correlation is explored between the diffusion coefficients of a gold nanoparticles, and biomarker bound gold, in a specific fluid. Furthering the experimental theme of the project, was the investigation of different fluids of varying viscosity, and how this parameter might affect the biosensor. This mechanism could be implemented into bedside use within hospitals and for use in
developing countries where cost and availability are key.
