Research interests

I am currently working on a book project that explores 'listening spaces' in contemporary French and Francophone documentaries, with a focus on the documentary convention of the filmed interview. Part of this project is particularly concerned with works by the Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman. Other research interests that dovetail with this project include queer theory, feminist theory, installation art, and studies of sound, voice, and relationality. My first monograph Godard and Sound: Acoustic Innovation in the Late Films of Jean-Luc Godard was published by I.B.Tauris in 2017 and explores the relationship of sound to vision in cinema and in turn our relationship as spectators with the audiovisual in a selection of post-1979 films by Jean-Luc Godard.

In 2014 I was awarded the Susan Hayward Prize by the Association for Studies in French Cinema, and in 2012 I was awarded the R.H. Gapper Postgraduate Essay Prize by the Society for French Studies.

Supervisory interests: I am interested in supervising PhD candidates on a range of topics in the broad areas of French and Francophone cinema and documentary film studies, encompassing any of the areas outlined above.
