Research interests

I lead a multi-disciplinary materials chemistry research group, exploring the design principles and applications of novel functional materials. There is a strong focus on the design, synthesis and application of electroactive aniline-based oligomers and related porous conjugated materials for gas capture and wider energy related applications.

There is also a continued and active interest in ionic self-assembly and the production of functional hierarchical supramolecular polymers and materials (in collaboration with Ian Manners).

Research activity:

  • Investigations into the design, synthesis and applications of electroactive oligo(aniline)-based (semi)conducting materials [Mol. Sys. Des. Eng. 2019, Chem. Sci. 2018, ChemNanoMat 2018, Adv. Opt. Mater. 2017, Chem. Eur. J. 2016, PCCP 2016, JACS 2015, Small 2015, Small 2015]
  • Preparation of porous conjugated materials for CO2 and iodine capture [Angew. Chem. 2019, Chem. Mater. 2017, ACS Appl. Mater. Interfaces 2017, Macromolecules 2016, Macromolecules 2015, Macrom. Rapid Commun. 2014, Chem. Commun. 2014]
  • Design, preparation and characterisation of hierarchical functional supramolecular materials [Chem. Soc. Rev. 2019, Chem. Eur. J. 2018, Macrom. 2018, Nat. Commun. 2017, JACS 2017, Langmuir 2016, Chem. Eur. J. 2015, Acc. Chem. Res. 2014, JACS 2013, Adv. Mater. 2012]

Local and International Activities:

I am Head of Inorganic and Materials Chemistry at the School of Chemistry (since August 2018), and co-PI and member of the Operational Management Team of the Bristol Centre for Functional Nanomaterials (BCFN), a £12M EPSRC-sponsored centre for doctoral training (CDT).

I hold an adjunct professorship at Tsinghua University (Beijing, China, since 2013), and have held visiting professorships at Helsinki University of Technology (now Aalto University, 2005 - 2010), Chinese Academy of Sciences' National Centre for Nanoscience and Technology (2012), and the University of Rennes1 (2018). I am a member of the International Advisory Board for the State Key Laboratory for Modification of Chemical Fibers & Polymer Materials' 111 International Interaction Programme at Donghua University, Shanghai, China.
