Miss Lizzie Bowes

I am a third year AHRC-funded PhD student at the University of Bristol, working across the Departments of Music, English, and affiliated with the University’s Centre for Black Humanities. My project considers a sub-genre of UK rap known as conscious rap, thinking about longer-form rap albums with politically conscious overtones as works of Black-British autofiction. I am interested in the ways in which UK rap artists craft narratives about themselves, their cultures and communities, and the creative licence they allow themselves when telling their stories.

I have presented my work at a range of conferences, including those of the American Musicological Society, Modern Language Association, and the Royal Musical Association.

My teaching primarily focuses on Black music and culture, and I am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. 

Elsewhere, I am a Research Associate at the Black Music Research Unit, which has recently co-curated the first national exhibition of Black-British Music in collaboration with the British Library.
